Hit Dog Hollers is the new fictional anthology from Waycross author Jerry Buckley. These 11 stories of the Wiregrass stretch in time from the 1880s to the 1980s. Tales that tell of the struggles and challenges of life in and around the vast Okefenokee wetland in Southeast Georgia:

  • The family that faces unexpected and heartbreaking tragedy;
  • The man who experiences an epiphany of life-changing magnitude;
  • People from different cultures who discover we’re not so different after all;
  • The age old conflict between fathers and sons;
  • Prohibition-era carpetbaggers discover the resolve of swampers.

These themes and others, are examined in this assortment of short stories amid the backdrop of natural beauty and eerie legends that surround the “Land of Trembling Earth.” Each tale, whether profound or eerie, or amusing, is a reflection of the human condition as seen by the author.

Buckley, the author of four novels, writes of the common man as he faces the challenges of life in a sometimes harsh and unforgiving environment. These stories resonate with the words of a writer familiar with the history of the Wiregrass and first-hand knowledge of the swamp, rivers, bays, sloughs, and majestic stands of timber that compose the heart of Southeast Georgia.
